1001 Days Straight

WordPress recently congratulated me on 1001 days straight of blog posts. That’s a lot of stories about me and my life experiences. However, I’ve actually written more than that. 1001 days puts me only to the end of August 2018.

I’ve written in this blog every day since January 27,2016. That’s 1950 days. I hit a few technical issues in the years of blogging which explains why it didn’t count every single day posted. Computers, am I right? Wait, I use my iPhone 98% of the time to write.

I have enjoyed journaling here in hopes that my experiences are uplifting and relatable to those who do read my blog. I enjoy writing about parenting, traveling, music, movies, memories, growing old, and kindness. Sometimes I stray from that and share a bittersweet or sad story. But it’s generally about me and my thoughts for the day.

As always, thank you to my devoted followers for reading my tales. They may never become a bestseller novel, but the stories are mine to share.

My Mistake s

I write a blog post every day. I do this mostly for me to just get out some thoughts and share my experiences. Because I have been writing for so long, I sometimes just post without proofreading my work.

I’ve posted grammatical errors, spelling errors, wrong photos, and even posts without titles. Sometimes I’ll catch my error as soon as I hit “Publish”. Then I scramble to correct it before anyone else sees it. Other times my wife will point out my mistake and I’ll get on it after the initial embarrassment passes.

On the rare occasion I’ll find a mistake months later- when I want to link back to it. Discovering a mistake that far along is the worst feeling. I appreciate that my readers don’t point out my flaws. Engaging with people over the content of what I write is far superior than someone pointing out my shortcomings.

Thinking back on it- over the past five years I don’t think anyone has made an observation on my errors. At least not publicly. Thank you for that.

And thank you for reading my blog for all of these years. Mistakes and all. I appreciate it.

A Picture Is Worth 1000 WordPress Followers

Hooray! My little blog has hit 1000 followers! This milestone is pretty big for me since I don’t actively advertise my blog. That’s mostly because I’m not selling anything. I’m just writing anecdotes and stories about my life.

I cannot express enough all of the gratitude I feel towards everyone. Having followers who “like and comment” on my blogs brings me to a positive place. Writing daily has been a great relief for my worries and stresses.

Another hearty THANK YOU to everyone for following along with my stories and opinions.

Express 999

I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to the 999 followers of my blog on WordPress. I know that there are others out there on Facebook, Twitter and via email who receive my daily musings as well.

But the 999 on WordPress? I can count on one hand the people who I have met in person who follow me on this site (and yes, I follow myself as well). The rest are strangers who happened to find me and decided that what I say is important enough to follow me. That’s pretty cool.

I have also interacted with those that seek to write a comment to me. Some of whom I would consider to be an “Online Friend” now. Having only met through WordPress and a few lines back and forth. Yet a kinship is formed, even for the briefest of moments.

I appreciate all the followers. Heck, even the Bots. Someone out there took the time to write an algorithm to search out keywords, and they stumbled upon me.

Seriously though- a hearty “Thank you” to everyone who follows my blog. I appreciate you.

Five Years Of Blogging

Well folks I made it this far and you have joined me for the ride. I am about to crest my five year mark of writing every single day. I cannot believe that I have been blogging now for 1825 days in a row.

I have diligently written every day for these five years- no matter what. I have written about movies and music (I’m not an entertainment blogger) and enjoying small businesses (I’m not an influencer). I even write about family (Not a parenting blog) or when I was on vacation in other countries (Nope, not a travel blog).

I just write for the sake of writing. Sometimes what I share can be inspirational. Most often it is to remind people that life is good and memories are worth sharing. Many people can relate to my experiences it seems, which can make for pleasant interactions with my audience.

Generally speaking, I don’t have thousands of followers. But of the almost 900 people that do follow and choose to interact with me, I will respond to every comment made. That always makes me happy. Last year in 2020, I had over 14,000 views on my site. That seems like an astronomical amount of strangers visiting my ramblings. Especially when I look at my stats and see that people all over the world read about my life.

I just want to say a hearty “Thank You” to all my friends and followers out there. I’m sure some days you think to yourself, “There’s Josef’s blog, showing up in my newsfeed again.” While other days you may look forward to seeing what I have in store.

I’m still Making It Up As I Go

I plan to keep my momentum going and will continue to share my thoughts each and every day. Please keep reading, sharing and interacting with me.

Love, Josef Making It Up As I Go

Last Minute Panic

It’s been a while since I’ve had a tough time writing. Usually I find something that happened and share the story. Sometimes a memory comes flooding in and I feel a strong desire to get the words out. But the past few weeks I e really struggled to keep up with my daily blogs.

What I write is generally for myself. I use my writing as a way of keeping calm and getting those anxiety feels away. I enjoy sharing in this community because 99% of the time people are kind with their comments.

Yes, I have written every single day since January 2016. The goal to write daily is a personal one. The deadline I gave myself is midnight every day. I do not want to skip a beat as I fear that it would make me susceptible to doing it again, and then again, until I finally just gave up.

I’m not ready to give up my writing. I just want you to know I’ve been having a tough time feeling creative. I am sorry about these late night posts. I generally like to have my stories out by breakfast. When the day has yet to take over, and the brain has had a good rest.

Hopefully I’ll be back on track again soon. Those of you who still follow-Bear with me. I’ll get better.

Sunshine Blogger Award

sunshine

The Rules Are:

1.Thank the person who nominated you and provide a link back to their blog.

2.Answer the 11 questions asked by the person who nominated you.

3.Nominate 11 people and ask them new 11 questions.

4.Notify the nominees by commenting on one of their posts.

5.List the rules and display the sunshine blogger award in your post.

Diary of a Gay Dad’s questions were:

1.What brings you the most happiness in life?

This is a tough one. I am most happy when I can make others happy. I find listening works wonders for this. I especially find happiness in making my family happy.

2. If you could ‘do it all again’? How would you have done ‘it’?

To partially quote Eminem- “If I could take it all back now, I wouldn’t. I would’ve done more shit that people said that I shouldn’t. But I’m all grown up now and upgraded…

3. Following on to that. Who would you be now?

Likely miserable. That “version” of me no longer exists. I’m glad to be the man I have become. I had to make mistakes in the past to get on the right path.

4.What makes you get up in the morning?

My alarm. Same when I have to work night shift. I usually hit snooze 4 times. A Shower and Coffee get me going after that.

5.Do you like Dalmatians? And if so, why?

Dalmatians? I suppose I do. I like large dogs. I miss our Rhodesian Ridge-back and love our elderly German Shepard.

6.Apple’s IOS or Android? And why the preference?

Apple. I love the simplicity and have enjoyed using Apple products since the early 80’s.

7.What’s your ‘Porn name’? Add your first pet’s name to your mothers maiden name!

Whiskey O’Donnell

8.Do you ever give a political opinion on your blog? I choose not to. So, why do you (or not)?

I avoid Politics in my blog as much as possible. Everyone has an opinion, so no need for me to share mine.

9.I have a design degree but also did year 1 of a geology degree! What 2 opposites make you happy?

The two opposites would have to be in the form of films and TV:

I enjoy Dystopian Sci-fi and Musicals.

10.What started you blogging?

My friend Matt Harding. Since then, I have written a daily journey of my life for 4.5 years. I used to attend a writer’s conference every year thinking I should write a novel. But alas, that has yet to come to fruition(or a beginning). So I blog.

11.Now, we have all engaged with the image of the rainbow over the lockdown period! I want to see a real myriad of colour now, so my final question is ‘what is your favourite colour? (Hehe.)

Honestly, my favorite colour is the Rainbow. Thanks to Kermit the Frog. I used to like Green as a child. Then it was red. Followed by black. It depends on my mood. I have had blue hair, green hair, purple hair… Colour in general is fun.

Okay. Now it’s my turn to ask questions and nominate people. I have been struggling with this part for quite a few days now. Here goes:

  1. What was the first film you remember seeing in the cinema?
  2. When reading a book, if you don’t like the start of it, do you finish it just to see how it ends?
  3. Who are your 3 favorite bloggers? Give a brief description of what they write.
  4. What is the kindest thing you have done for a stranger?
  5. What is your definition of true love?
  6. Describe what your favorite colour is using only metaphors.
  7. Why do you read my blog?
  8. Where have you traveled- but long to return to?
  9. One space or two after typing a period at the end of a sentence?
  10. How do you think the world is going to recover from COVID-19?
  11. What is the answer to life, the universe and everything?

I don’t expect everyone to get in on this as many of the bloggers I read have certain styles that may not reflect this method of blogging. Here is my list of nominees. I suggest you check them out anyways, as I enjoy what they write.

Finally- My blog readers and followers. I think it would be neat for some of my readers to share their answers in the comment sections here or on my Facebook page, or via email. I follow many blog pages that have thousands of followers- those blogs are more of a business per se than a personal interaction. The ones I mentioned here have liked many of my posts in the past or simply have great articles that they share.

Thank you for playing along.

More Than Expected

When I started this daily blog Four Years Ago, my goal was to share about my life and experiences. I use my blog as a way to capture memories and hopefully influence positivity. I was happy and content with friends and family reading up about our lives. But something much more expansive occurred.

Gaining and earning “Followers” is a great feeling. Strangers have become friends- offering “Likes” and “Comments”. All of which have been positive and endearing. When I receive a new “Follower” I check to see what they blog about. Many times I end up following them as well. Everything from DIY to travel blogs.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Thank You for reading! I appreciate it. I hope that you find some solace in reading about my journey on this planet. And of course, always feel free to share my stories with others as you see fit.

Day By Day

The fact that I’ve been writing daily for Four Years means one of two things- I’m devoted to it or I’m addicted to it. I’d like to think it’s the former. I enjoy blogging. My blog isn’t designed to sell anything in particular nor is it much of an opinion piece. A lot of what I write is from the heart. Stories of my life and family. Sometimes I’ll promote small businesses or share my travel experiences.

Wanting to write while sick is difficult. There’s no ambition left inside me. It’s like my body and mind are under attack and weak. But I push through and share stories. Even though when I look back on the stories- they feel halfhearted and forced. I’m sorry about that.

Usually I try and have my blogs written and shared by early morning Pacific Time. Some days though, I have a tough time coming up with a good idea. Especially if I’m not having to go to work or have plans for the day. Driving is when I do my most thinking and thought processing. I also love sharing pictures on my blog that I feel relate to what I’m writing.

Thanks again for putting up with me through thick and thin. Sickness and in health. You are some of the best readers around.

Four Years Of Daily Musings

January 27th, 2016. I began the first of my daily blog posts with this: Come Here To See All My Mistakes. Sure, you’ve read about those, but you’ve also read about my successes. Not to mention family and friends. Sometimes travel or home popped up. Occasionally I wrote about work.

Generally I wrote whatever came to mind when I pulled out my iPhone to write my daily diary. I appreciate you all for coming along and reading these. I know you don’t always want to comment. Nor do you always remember to read them. And that’s totally okay with me.

I sill want to thank everyone for watching my blog grow and change each and every day for FOUR YEARS. Crazy to think that I have diligently written 1460 days in a row.

1461 if you count today.

Hard To Think

I’m having a tough time picking a topic to write about currently. So unfortunately I’m going to be cutting today’s blog a bit short.

Perhaps tomorrow I’ll think of something. I don’t want to be a lentil.

Until next time when I can do better.

Too Busy Being Busy

I’m busy trying to fit everything into my day that I can, that I have been neglecting my blog. I keep putting off writing until I can find a solid half an hour to an hour to write. I’ve been falling behind on writing some genuinely good blog content.

Having quality content draws in more readership, right? Or do I need keywords and tags? At night when I’m in bed, I’m browsing my phone and reading some of my older blog posts to see what was successful in regards to traffic. Reading my blogs by going through the Facebook link, or having my wife read them, I think I’ve skewed some of the numbers. Especially for my older content. I feel I’ve read some of my more popular ones numerous times. Or did I make them popular by rereading them?

I should put more thought into my daily musings. But lately I haven’t had the time to proofread and do rewrites. A quick “once over” and then I hit publish. Just like today’s post. I’m going to work on taking the time to write something tangible.

Tomorrow.

Elite Achievement Unlocked

Yesterday I hit another milestone on WordPress. I’m really proud of myself and also can’t believe it. I hit 1337 days in a row of writing!

Amazing! When I first started, I didn’t imagine that I’d have three and a half years of daily writing in me. But here we are. A bunch of thoughts and stories out there in the interwebs as I try and navigate this universe. Hence the title of my blog, Making It Up As I Go.

Maybe I’m inspirational at times. Sometimes I’m sharing how I parent with the accomplishments and challenges the three kids of ours bring forth. I try and be positive as often as possible. Sometimes my baggage gets shared, but I find it a great way to work through emotional turmoil. It makes me a better person to get it out rather than having a pit inside me fester and rot.

1337

I hope everyone who reads and follows along has enjoyed my musings over the past 1337 posts. I feel ELITE having made is this far. Thank you for joining me on my journey.

Three Years of Blogging

I have now done three years of daily blogging.

Woot-woot!

This is a great achievement for me since I write each and every blog post myself. I actually missed my anniversary date by a day which to me means that I’ve made writing a daily routine that I cannot miss. Those times I’m out of WiFi or cellular range- I’ll “schedule” a post.

Every day I write about something that piques my interest. Note: I just had to look up which word to use- peak, peek or pique. I enjoy writing about my adventures, my family and my thoughts.

After three years of writing I have also become a more positive person in my interactions and stories. If you look back at my works you may notice that I avoid using negative words or connotations. This positivity has made me like who I am a great deal more than I expected.

Of course I am human after all, and my world does have moments that can be more unicorn farts and pixie poops than I want to share. But throwing a learning moment, revelation or change of action helps to turn my mood around.

I have more stories to share and a life to live. I hope that all of my readers and followers have enjoyed checking out my life and adventures. Thank you for a wonderful three years!

Motivational Writing

Over the summer I took my daughters to the Chapters Book Store. We didn’t end up buying anything, but we did do a lot of cover reading. It seems that a trend has arisen in the form of Motivational Writing.

The titles are reflective of our society today. With a curse word thrown in the title to add some humor. Like an internet meme complaining about work or people. A couple of decades ago, the titles of such ideas were kinder and gentler.

“Chicken Soup for the Soul” came out in 1993. Since the first book, the company now has offshoots that cater to nearly everyone. They produce a dozen new ones every year. They seem to be the leaders in the market. Even the original title makes you feel warm inside.

My daughters told me I should take a few of my stories I’ve written in this blog and piece together my own book. I think that’s really sweet, and it got me thinking that maybe I should. First things first- I need a catchy title and book cover.

I love the title of my blog. But would it translate into a read worthy motivational book?

I love this piece of art from downtown Vancouver. However, it holds a bit of negativity and doesn’t sound motivating enough.

This is another favorite photo of mine. A bit presumptuous in a way, but goals are important. Even if it means floating on a lake in an inflatable boat.

Naw. This one isn’t great. Even though I find it amusing.

How about something completely obscure that mentions robots? As if my book would somehow change your life from being robotic and systematic.

Or way off and use something my son thinks is humorous? Not sure this title is along the lines of “You are a Badass” or “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck”.

In the end, I’ll keep on writing every day and hope that I can piece together a series of stories that matter most to me.

Let me know which stories I’ve written that you think I should share in book form. I’d love to hear these. Getting feedback from my blog readers and friends helps a lot in figuring out what stories I should share.

Early Morning Post

Usually I try and schedule my posts for the mornings. I like to have them out for the day- I find I get more traffic that way. But sometimes I just don’t get my thoughts out ahead of time and need to post later in the evening.

I wake up the next day and rush to stare at my phone to see if anyone has read or responded to my blog. Usually to be disappointed.

So I’m going to try and write my blogs and have them out during the early morning on the West Coast. This is where I need to discipline myself and hunker down during my free time.

Not going to fail myself this time. I can do it!

Likes

I enjoy writing in my blog. Some people enjoy reading it. I like getting “Likes” from complete strangers as well. It makes me feel good. Like as if what I am sharing is worthwhile.

Sometimes what I write is beneficial to other people. Perhaps they can draw on my experiences. Or perhaps they come to laugh at my stupidity (like the time I Broke my cellphone). I like to think that they read my blogs because I make people feel good.

So if you like my musings, like my blog. That’s it. I like it when you like me. I don’t earn any money from the likes. Just a little ego boost.

I like that.

My Ever Growing Online Family

Blogging is fun. I do the writing mostly for myself, but it seems others enjoy reading about my life. From old friends to complete strangers- everyone has been relatively positive about what I share. Good feels.

I’ve also enjoyed online interactions with my fellow bloggers. Every week, I am interacting with more and more people. They are like Magical Internet Faeries spreading joy in my life. On this journey, I’ve been lucky enough to dodge the trolls.

Or perhaps the trend is swaying in the right direction? I have found lately that people proudly share more positivity, and say things like love conquers all or even hate leads to suffering…

Whatever the reason may be, I’m really happy to be a part of the online community. Keep up the good work universe and all you Internet Faeries who bring me joy! You know who you are.

This is Not Today’s Topic

I’m pretty sure I had this great idea for today’s blog post. Then I went to bed without writing it down or starting it. Now I have completely forgotten what I wanted to write about. All day- no idea…

Was it my children?

Perhaps my dog?

Was it involving our home?

Did something happen at work?

What stupid thing did I do as a child?

Did I want to mention cooking?

My father?

Travel?

Music?

Star Wars?

???

I really do not remember. So this is it. My blog post about nothing. Which is totally okay. Not everything or everyday will be inspired.

On the bright side- I got the heat working in my home again.

Two Years of Daily Musings

January 18, 2016 I began this blog. I’ve written one post every single day. It’s my baby and I’m proud of myself. Last year I wrote about My One Year Blogaversary. I thought that was special. But today is doubly as good.

Another year of stories with more positive thoughts than negative ones written. More shares, likes and follows from old friends and new ones. A couple of days ago, I surpassed 100 followers on WordPress. (Yay!) The majority of whom are folks I’ve never met in person. None of them trying to trade “A like for a like” which is respectable. If someone new follows me, I will read a few of their stories. Many times I end up following them. I’ve enjoyed the conversation and feedback through these interactions with complete strangers as well.

Twenty years ago, a friend of mine once said “Constant observation of myself has made me what I am today.” That phrase stuck with me as I moved forward in life. I often forgot to look back. Over the past two years of reflection and memories, I have re-discovered who I am:

I’m just a guy Making It Up As I Go.

Passionate

Today was the first day since I began my daily blog post that I was truly stumped with what to write about.  A bit of depression hit me at the end of this week, making it difficult to focus and come up with what to write about.  Yesterday’s blog post was one I had been working on for a while- so I just polished the edges and tweaked it to completion.

Today I decided to follow the advice from The Daily Post suggestion.  I often skimmed over these thinking, “what a good idea” for those days that I really don’t know what to write.  Today was that day.  The one word prompt PASSIONATE seemed like a great way to get me back on track.  Some people write poems, some write stories, I’m going to blog about why I am passionate about me.

Now you may be thinking, “Hey Josef, isn’t that a tad bit narcissistic?”  Believe me, I’m not saying I’m a God in any way.  What I want to portray is that I am passionate about my life.  I’ve always been a firm believer in the “Golden Rule” and that you should do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  I don’t need to be religious to understand that this is the right thing to do.

Working hard towards a goal often brings out my passion for quality workmanship. Whether it’s cooking a meal for my family or twenty of my closest friends, I am passionate about creating a tasty meal.  The same goes for doing home improvements.  I may not be the best carpenter or plumber, but I do the best I can and love the final results.

I would like to say I am passionate about movies, but my passion only falls towards movies that make me happy.  Many films from my childhood/teenage years are the ones I am most passionate about.  (Can anyone say Star Wars?)  The same goes for the shows and movies that make my children’s eyes light up.  If we can’t stop discussing a show, I know that it will end up in our movie library.

Because of the passion I have towards a sci-fi and anime, I have become passionate about making costumes, cosplay & props.  I have been known to get upset at myself for cutting corners just to finish a costume.  I try and make it as accurate as possible; that is the challenge.  Making cosplay for my children has become almost a full time job.  They want the details to shine through, and because of their commitment to the characters, I do my best to make their costumes as close to perfect as possible.  I am always learning new tricks and secrets to improve what I make.

Because of my passion for cosplay and costumes, we have been traveling constantly over the past few years.  These trips have all been road trips, with added stops and experiences on the way.  I have been passionate about bringing new and one of a kind experiences into my family’s life.  All of these journeys have shown me that I am passionate about educating my children beyond just the textbooks.

I took a wrong turn.

Finally, I am passionate about my writing.  I have been on a personal pilgrimage to discover “my inner voice” since the start of the year.  Some of the stories I share about my life or experiences are humorous.  However, I haven’t been able to portray humor in a way that feels right.  Sometimes it feels forced other times it feels predictable.  Some of the stories I share are my way of talking about how wonderful life is and how much I am enjoying the moments I have on this planet.

But my most read stories that I have written are my saddest ones.  The ones that show a vulnerable side to me.  The ones that, even as I write them, I have brought myself to tears.  These are the stories that people can relate to.  These are the stories that I pour my soul into and work really hard to perfect.  These stories may be sad, but are passionate nonetheless.

Thus concludes today’s blog post.  PASSIONATE.

WordPress 200

I’ve been enjoying using WordPress for a few months now.  It’s fairly easy to use for a beginner such as myself.  Wordpress offers a convenient app that I use 90% of the time.  This is mostly due to the fact that my cellphone is hardly ever out of my reach.  It’s great to be able to pull out my iPhone, jot a quick draft, save it and set it aside.  I like the PC as well when I’m trying to edit a more important (to me) piece.  I am impressed with being able to save on the mobile app and crossover to the PC and vice verse.  The save is almost instant allowing for me to switch over with ease.

It started slowly, but I am receiving more badges for my accomplishments and that’s very encouraging.  I’ve also been receiving feedback and compliments from other blog writers.  These strangers, out of the kindness of their hearts, take the time to read and respond to my musings.  It’s a wonderful feeling to be welcomed into this online universe of creativity.  After a “Like” or comment by a fellow blogger, I usually take the time to read what they have written on their blogs.  This has drawn me to many subjects and ideas that I otherwise would have overlooked in my daily life.  Making my internet browsing a more fun adventure these days.  Like getting sucked down the rabbit hole…

Wordpress has many more features available that I can utilize.  I have only really used the basics- write a post add an image or two and maybe a website link.  This week, I am going to try a few more features and hope that they work in my favor.  If not at least I can write movie quotes and post pictures for my own enjoyment.

Thanks again to all who follow me and have left me feedback.  I feel like I don’t say that enough.  I even have a Facebook page all to myself where I share these blog posts and the occasional image or link to other bloggers.  Feel free to “Like” that page as well for up to date musings: Josef A. Havelka

I have no idea what I’m doing.  Better follow my lead.

If you’re like me, you want to make something with your blog.  You want to see it flourish and grow.  You want the internets to explode with your name and for the trolls to be so afraid to come out to torment you.  But if you’re like me, there is a struggle going on.

I am still trying to figure out what makes a good blog post worthy of reading.

  • Is it writing from the heart?
  • Should I be catering to a specific audience?
  • Should I narrow down my writing to one category?

What about drawing traffic to my blog?

  • Do I need more keywords?
  • Should I keep my writing short?
  • Should I promote myself more?
  • Do pictures help?
  • What time of day should I post?

But what about the people already reading my blog posts?

  • Why do they read it?
  • Is keeping each one short a good idea?
  • Should I be writing everyday?
  • What if I change my style, will people still read it?

Hold up.  I should start with a more pertinent question.

  • Why do I blog?

That last one is the ultimate question to life, the universe and everything when it comes to me and my blog personally.  It can be broken down into a few reasons:

  • I’ve made it my goal to write everyday.
  • I want to share stories of my life with family and friends.
  • I enjoy it.

It’s true.  I enjoy writing.  I enjoy sharing myself and my life with people.  Some people can relate to my life.  Others see me in a whole new way.  Engaging with people in this medium has brought me some new friends.  It has drawn me to other bloggers.  Blogging has made me read more and share fewer cat videos.

When I began blogging, it felt like a daunting task to write everyday.  I’ve gone back and re-read some of my daily posts.  Some are terribly written in a hurried manner just to ensure I wrote for the day.  Other posts show that I took the time to write a worthy story.

I don’t think my current blog posts will ever make me famous or make me money.  Perhaps one day I shall change my rhythm and finally promote my life changing, awe-inspiring, self-serving stories and cash in.

As I struggle to figure out what I’m doing, please continue to enjoy my journey.  Enjoy following my growth into what may one day become fruitful.  I don’t have any answers on how to become a successful blogger, perhaps one day.

Until that time though, be sure and share my blog with everyone you know!
