Diary of a Gay Dad’s questions were:

1.What brings you the most happiness in life?

This is a tough one. I am most happy when I can make others happy. I find listening works wonders for this. I especially find happiness in making my family happy.

2. If you could ‘do it all again’? How would you have done ‘it’?

To partially quote Eminem- “If I could take it all back now, I wouldn’t. I would’ve done more shit that people said that I shouldn’t. But I’m all grown up now and upgraded…

3. Following on to that. Who would you be now?

Likely miserable. That “version” of me no longer exists. I’m glad to be the man I have become. I had to make mistakes in the past to get on the right path.

4.What makes you get up in the morning?

My alarm. Same when I have to work night shift. I usually hit snooze 4 times. A Shower and Coffee get me going after that.

5.Do you like Dalmatians? And if so, why?

Dalmatians? I suppose I do. I like large dogs. I miss our Rhodesian Ridge-back and love our elderly German Shepard.

6.Apple’s IOS or Android? And why the preference?

Apple. I love the simplicity and have enjoyed using Apple products since the early 80’s.

7.What’s your ‘Porn name’? Add your first pet’s name to your mothers maiden name!

Whiskey O’Donnell

8.Do you ever give a political opinion on your blog? I choose not to. So, why do you (or not)?

I avoid Politics in my blog as much as possible. Everyone has an opinion, so no need for me to share mine.

9.I have a design degree but also did year 1 of a geology degree! What 2 opposites make you happy?

The two opposites would have to be in the form of films and TV:

I enjoy Dystopian Sci-fi and Musicals.

10.What started you blogging?

My friend Matt Harding. Since then, I have written a daily journey of my life for 4.5 years. I used to attend a writer’s conference every year thinking I should write a novel. But alas, that has yet to come to fruition(or a beginning). So I blog.

11.Now, we have all engaged with the image of the rainbow over the lockdown period! I want to see a real myriad of colour now, so my final question is ‘what is your favourite colour? (Hehe.)

Honestly, my favorite colour is the Rainbow. Thanks to Kermit the Frog. I used to like Green as a child. Then it was red. Followed by black. It depends on my mood. I have had blue hair, green hair, purple hair… Colour in general is fun.

Okay. Now it’s my turn to ask questions and nominate people. I have been struggling with this part for quite a few days now. Here goes:

  1. What was the first film you remember seeing in the cinema?
  2. When reading a book, if you don’t like the start of it, do you finish it just to see how it ends?
  3. Who are your 3 favorite bloggers? Give a brief description of what they write.
  4. What is the kindest thing you have done for a stranger?
  5. What is your definition of true love?
  6. Describe what your favorite colour is using only metaphors.
  7. Why do you read my blog?
  8. Where have you traveled- but long to return to?
  9. One space or two after typing a period at the end of a sentence?
  10. How do you think the world is going to recover from COVID-19?
  11. What is the answer to life, the universe and everything?

I don’t expect everyone to get in on this as many of the bloggers I read have certain styles that may not reflect this method of blogging. Here is my list of nominees. I suggest you check them out anyways, as I enjoy what they write.

Finally- My blog readers and followers. I think it would be neat for some of my readers to share their answers in the comment sections here or on my Facebook page, or via email. I follow many blog pages that have thousands of followers- those blogs are more of a business per se than a personal interaction. The ones I mentioned here have liked many of my posts in the past or simply have great articles that they share.

Thank you for playing along.

More Than Expected

When I started this daily blog Four Years Ago, my goal was to share about my life and experiences. I use my blog as a way to capture memories and hopefully influence positivity. I was happy and content with friends and family reading up about our lives. But something much more expansive occurred.

Gaining and earning “Followers” is a great feeling. Strangers have become friends- offering “Likes” and “Comments”. All of which have been positive and endearing. When I receive a new “Follower” I check to see what they blog about. Many times I end up following them as well. Everything from DIY to travel blogs.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Thank You for reading! I appreciate it. I hope that you find some solace in reading about my journey on this planet. And of course, always feel free to share my stories with others as you see fit.

Come On Get Happy

Sometimes I overly express that people should be happy and take care of themselves. The truth is that it’s also totally okay to not happy. Look at my life. I’m a tall, thin guy who has trouble finding pants. And that sucks.

But music makes me happy. And something about music from decades ago is great for chasing away my existential blues. Those classic pop songs that you can sing along with.

Sometimes I wish I could write music. Music that others would sing for generations- even after the Hits no longer held the charts.

I also love discovering unique music at thrifts stores that was tossed aside. I’ll pick up all sorts of music from 1920’s thru to the 1980’s. Albums that no one knows or would ever need to know. They get play time now in my home.

Am I making people happy? I don’t know. Maybe in some inadvertent way. Buying an album at a thrift store ensures money goes back where it’s needed. Playing those albums brings joy to me and sometimes my family. That joy gets spread in the world to their friends.

So maybe I can make people happier.

10 Day Music

Recently on Facebook, one of those “copy and paste” challenges has been going around:

“Ten albums in no particular order that made an impact on you that are still in your rotation today. No explanation is required, just post the cover and nominate someone new each day to do the same.”

I had been watching this unfold on many friends’ feeds for few months. Each time I saw an album posted, I understood more about that person. Even though it says “no explanation is required…” most people explained a bit about the album. Some of the music shared was really good. Some was stuff I’d never heard of.

Ten days ago, I was nominated by a friend. So I decided to play along. I enjoyed posting a new album every day. It was neat to get response from people about my choices. My music selection over the ten days were:

  1. Monty Python: Sings
  2. James: Laid
  3. Moulin Rouge Soundtrack
  4. Space: Female Of The Species
  5. Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here
  6. Beastie Boys: License To Ill
  7. Martin Solveig: Smash
  8. Faith No More: King For A Day…
  9. Green Day: Dookie
  10. Queen: Greatest Hits

All of these albums are still being played constantly. I hope I inspired others to listen to my music. Who knows, maybe I’ll figure out more music that I’ve missed out on or forgotten about as my friends continue to share their albums.

Two Years of Daily Musings

January 18, 2016 I began this blog. I’ve written one post every single day. It’s my baby and I’m proud of myself. Last year I wrote about My One Year Blogaversary. I thought that was special. But today is doubly as good.

Another year of stories with more positive thoughts than negative ones written. More shares, likes and follows from old friends and new ones. A couple of days ago, I surpassed 100 followers on WordPress. (Yay!) The majority of whom are folks I’ve never met in person. None of them trying to trade “A like for a like” which is respectable. If someone new follows me, I will read a few of their stories. Many times I end up following them. I’ve enjoyed the conversation and feedback through these interactions with complete strangers as well.

Twenty years ago, a friend of mine once said “Constant observation of myself has made me what I am today.” That phrase stuck with me as I moved forward in life. I often forgot to look back. Over the past two years of reflection and memories, I have re-discovered who I am:

I’m just a guy Making It Up As I Go.

Make Your Own Inspiration (or share mine if you wish)

Over the past year, I have made my own inspirational images. All of which I have shared with friends and family. Because they are meant to enlighten folks- I have no issue with them being shared by others.

This was my first one. I was floating on a lake where the beauty and tranquility just amazed me. This photo is all sorts of edited, but it pops with a feeling of peace.

This photo was originally shared on my Instagram account (without the quote). I was driving home one morning when I crossed over a set of tracks. Being a railroader has always caused me to double check before crossing over train tracks and thus I saw a beautiful view of leading lines. Afterwards, I added the text because I realize that my job brings me joy.

This is today’s image. I was driving home from having my car serviced as the sun was rising. As I drove down the road, I was admiring the ice on the trees when I noticed the “one way” sign with icicles. After pulling over to take a photo, I noticed the contrast of warm and cool colours. Before I shared this photo, I decided to add some simple text without taking much away from the picture.

I’ve always loved photography. I’m happy my children do as well. Since starting this blog, I’ve also done my best to remain positive. I share positive and inspirational quotes and images I find online. I became compelled to add my own spice into the interwebs. My hope is to share not just my photos, but my thoughts as well.

Moving forward, I am going to continue to perfect my photo editing skills. If you like what you see, by all means share an image or blog post. I’m not making royalties of my work at this time, nor do I expect to.

Please just share a kind message or thought. You never know who may need it. I’m in a good place right now, but one day I may need a smile- so it’s always nice to see things like this shared.

I Wanna Know What You’re Thinking

There are some things you can’t hide.

I wanna know

What you’re feeling.

Tell me what’s on your mind.

Information Society.

Inside of my mind is a plethora of thoughts.  Thoughts I have shared daily for many days now. According to my stats- 595 days of blogging. I’m almost at 8000 visitors and 12,000 views.  I’ve also had readership from 80 different countries.  To me- these are some of the nicest numbers I have seen in my life.

The biggest take away from writing daily is the kindness people bring forward. Unlike social media, there is less negativity in this aspect of my world. It brings joy to my heart. Any comments or notes written to me about my posts are encouraging. It keeps me excited about writing.

Sharing my version of art gives me more purpose. It drives me to be a better writer and a kinder person. Inside of my mind is an entire world to explore. Sharing my tales are a way for family, friends and strangers to peer through the window of my soul and see something unique.

I encourage everyone to express themselves in an artistic manner. It can be hard to put yourself out there. Getting over the fear of rejection is a tough hurdle.

Back to my title of today’s piece: I wanna know what you’re thinking.

Please share your works of art more.  Be it writing, drawing, singing, dancing, photography, or any other number of things- please share it.  The world needs more art.  More expression.  More beauty. More kindness.  We all have it inside of us.  Let’s make this planet a great place to live on.

Share. You may be as surprised as I am at how many people you can reach in the end.

I have no idea what I’m doing.  Better follow my lead.

If you’re like me, you want to make something with your blog.  You want to see it flourish and grow.  You want the internets to explode with your name and for the trolls to be so afraid to come out to torment you.  But if you’re like me, there is a struggle going on.

I am still trying to figure out what makes a good blog post worthy of reading.

  • Is it writing from the heart?
  • Should I be catering to a specific audience?
  • Should I narrow down my writing to one category?

What about drawing traffic to my blog?

  • Do I need more keywords?
  • Should I keep my writing short?
  • Should I promote myself more?
  • Do pictures help?
  • What time of day should I post?

But what about the people already reading my blog posts?

  • Why do they read it?
  • Is keeping each one short a good idea?
  • Should I be writing everyday?
  • What if I change my style, will people still read it?

Hold up.  I should start with a more pertinent question.

  • Why do I blog?

That last one is the ultimate question to life, the universe and everything when it comes to me and my blog personally.  It can be broken down into a few reasons:

  • I’ve made it my goal to write everyday.
  • I want to share stories of my life with family and friends.
  • I enjoy it.

It’s true.  I enjoy writing.  I enjoy sharing myself and my life with people.  Some people can relate to my life.  Others see me in a whole new way.  Engaging with people in this medium has brought me some new friends.  It has drawn me to other bloggers.  Blogging has made me read more and share fewer cat videos.

When I began blogging, it felt like a daunting task to write everyday.  I’ve gone back and re-read some of my daily posts.  Some are terribly written in a hurried manner just to ensure I wrote for the day.  Other posts show that I took the time to write a worthy story.

I don’t think my current blog posts will ever make me famous or make me money.  Perhaps one day I shall change my rhythm and finally promote my life changing, awe-inspiring, self-serving stories and cash in.

As I struggle to figure out what I’m doing, please continue to enjoy my journey.  Enjoy following my growth into what may one day become fruitful.  I don’t have any answers on how to become a successful blogger, perhaps one day.

Until that time though, be sure and share my blog with everyone you know!
